I'm coming in just a tad bit late on this post, but I appreciate the tips, nonetheless. I haven't used my microwave in about 1 month, and it's SO worth the extra time it takes (and almost worth the extra pot I have to wash). ;)

I have never really used the microwave. I boil water in a kettle, I melt stuff on the stove, leave butter, cream cheese etc...out on the counter to soften. Microwave popcorn smells rancid to me so I have a Whirly pop and make it on the stove top and it is delicious. The only thing I use my microwave for is the vent function, mine is built in over the stove, the timer and I store bread and muffins in it. The cooking function doesn't work correctly right now. I am sure I will replace it if we move, but for now it is an airtight storage box!

Shalom,
Hmmm, as for coconut oil, it's so fast to melt in a pot on the stove, or even in a metal or glass dish while an oven is preheating, but maybe that warmer would be nice for coffee (I don't drink hot drinks, so I'm no help there). I like just baking extra potatoes one day, and then they only take 5-10 minutes in my toaster oven to reheat, and they stay warm soooo much longer than mic'd potatoes! ;) Katie

I am thinking of educing/eliminating microwave usage. Butter isn't a problem, since I stated using a butter crock. I just keep it out at room temp up to a month and try to remember to change the water every 3 days (or close to it anyway). I am thinking of getting a baby bottle warmer or one of those warmers made for keeping mugs of coffee warm to melt my coconut oil and other easily melted or warmed items. I would appreciate tip from anyone with experience with either one. I might also get a quick hot water heater/coffee pot for my tea water (I have a kettle, but faster would be nice when everyone is already sitting down to eat). I will have to work a bit at reheating food the biggee is baking potatoes in the mic is so much faster than oven. One thing I will really miss is using it as a food warmer. When something is done before the rest of the food or someone can't eat right then I put the plate in the mic. Since it is a small enclosed area the heat from the food stays closer and helps keep it warm longer.

Katie,
Maybe it's in the nature of our name to be devil's advocate; I do it all the time and welcome it.

You're right, the research is sketchy. That's why the mic isn't out of our house entirely. I go with the KNOWN: cooking on the stovetop/oven doesn't do all those things either, and hasn't for 100s of years. Microwaves...are new-ish. So I just skip them, most of the time.
Thanks for pushing my thinking!
:) the other Katie

Not to be the devil's advocate here, but all of this microwave-shedding is based on "if, some, and may" research? As in, there is no conclusive evidence that microwaves kill nutrients or emit radiation or do anything harmful at all? I have a hard time with that. We don't use our microwave for everything, but it makes no sense to me to stop using it based on zero scientific evidence. Just my humble opinion.

Dipi,
Thanks for the tips! We're pretty well-versed at going no-mic now, and I think just like you (save on the dishes!). :) Katie

I know this is from a year ago, but we gave up the microwave almost 2 1/2 years ago and use a saucepan or the oven. I find I can heat up food on a dinner plate in the oven, or else in little pyrex glass dishes (and kids could even just eat the meal straight out of that to save washing).

Hope this helps if you're still having trouble.
