Charlotte,
I hear adding the citric acid makes a huge difference, but I'm too afraid to try it! ;) Katie

I'm so glad I found this post, because it makes me feel better about our terrible experiment in homemade dishwasher detergent! I've been stalwartly using the borax/washing soda/salt one that's all over the internet, much to my husband's dismay. He's in the same boat as your husband, seeing his favorite comfort foods banished and now dealing with every aspect of the household going through experiments. I just stopped using the dish detergent last week, after 2 months of imperfect results. I just really didn't want to use Cascade anymore! But it does such a wonderful job, and we were sick of re-washing by hand. Homemade toothpaste and detergent are my big wishes right now -- I know there's a good recipe somewhere!

Lisa,
I'm a big fan of Biokleen if you want natural detergent, and drugstore.com has the best sales. I never found a homemade version that was effective enough for me. However - I just started having weird filmy problems, so I'm wondering if the ACV will help vs. the regular vinegar. Thank you! :) Katie

I use 2 tbs. Cascade and applecider vinager as a rinse aid. I didn't have any luck with reg vinager. We have hard water and do rinse. We have 6 children and sometimes foster, so we are frugal about everything here. The dishwasher is just suplimental to handwashing, but I'd like them to come out just as clean as the hand washed ones. I feel like it is hit, or miss some days. Would love to hear more creative suggestions.

I have to prewash my dishes since I have a useless dishwasher BUT a Tbsp borax and a Tbsp bakingsoda works great for me with vinegar as a rinse agent.

I've seen recipes with citric acid, and I've tried a lot of things! I finally decided not to make my own and just use Biokleen -- Katie

Have you tried food grade citric acid? I use this instead of lemi-shine and I'm going to try it instead of detergent....

I used Seventh Generation powder and am satisfied. Tried the Palmolive Eco, but it didn't clean too well for me. I've read of people that have used Charlie's Soap successfully, but they don't necessarily recommend it since it wasn't formulated for dishwashers (but they say if it works for you, go for it). I don't use standard rinse agents, instead I used just white vinegar.

Stephanie,
I'm waiting on a product review sample from Mrs. Meyer's - I have great hope (plus I'm out of Cascade, so I hope it gets here soon!). :)
