I’m a big skeptic about the safety of plastics, and my kitchen is becoming more and more overrun by glass containers, and a few stainless steel water bottles.
We’ve talked here at KS about using glass drinking glasses to avoid BPA in many water bottles, switching your plastic storage container stash over to glass, and recently about avoiding plastic bags or at least reusing all of them as often as possible. I’m excited to share a little perk that can help you with these Monday Missions:
Until August 7, 2009 (Happy Birthday to me!), KS readers can receive $5 off any purchase of $30 or more, when shopping at NOplastic.ca. To use this offer, you just need to input noplastic promo in the discount coupon box of the website shopping cart.
You’ll find stainless steel water bottles, food storage containers, wooden cutting boards and more for fairly reasonable prices.
For an even better deal, be sure to check out my Mrs. Meyer’s dishsoap and cleaning book giveaway going on through this Thursday – free is a great price!

Katie – we’ve had a recent bug problem in our home. The small insects seem to be attracted to anything cardboard (probably the moisture in it). So, we would like to find airtight storage containers for crackers, pretzels, barley, oatmeal, etc etc. I checked out the noplastic site but stainless steel containers for plain ol’ storage is pretty cost prohibitive. I had originally planned on getting some Tupperware but that is plastic. So, what affordable alternative would you suggest?
Thanks.

Mary,
What a great and timely question (we have ants at our house lately, too). I’m a huge fan of spaghetti sauce jars – FREE, and good for liquids like leftover soup or barley and oats. I’ve found that quart-sized canning jars are versatile, too, and only about $1/jar, probably less this time of year if you can catch a sale or coupon. If you catch a garage sale, look for canning jars or those Koeze nut jars for cheap, and crackers look really pretty in them. Beyond that, I’d check the dollar store for plastic stuff…just check the bottom and make sure it’s no. 2, 4 or 5. I always figure that the make-up of dry goods has to leach less than liquids, so I don’t worry as much about things like crackers. Good luck with your little critters!

I’m getting ready to stock up on these glass jars for storage, at a very reasonable price. They come in many sizes. I’m especially excited about the smaller ones for spice storage, and the really large ones for bulk purchases. I found the link in an old post on Cheeseslave.com (thanks Ann Marie).

Jen,
Thank you for sharing that link! Those jars look excellent. If I was in the market for new storage, I’d go with these. I’m always running out of “little” containers, but I think I’m stocked up on baby food jars for now.
