Peggy,
Perfect! You just can't pack a sandwich the night before or it will get crusty...

Jamie,
Yep, I wouldn't send milk either. The waste and the stink are exactly my reasons! ;) Katie

I also let my daughter do her milk drinking at home. I send water in a stainless steel bottle to school. She doesn't always drink all the milk I send (and the milk we buy is expensive.) I also have these horrible memories of my childhood lunchboxes always smelling faintly of sour milk. Lol. I just refuse to perpetuate that tradition.

I hope I'm not repeating info from another commenter. I'm too busy with hurricane prep to read all of the comments, but this post reminded me of a recent NY Times article, "The Plastic Sandwich Bag Flunks": http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/27/business/energy-environment/education-officials-and-retailers-push-for-environmentally-friendly-school-lunches.html?src=me&ref=business .

One way to avoid the milk waste and expense is just have your kid drink water at school, then give extra milk at home.

We pack everything in small containers, in a lunchbox, with no disposable anything. If kids don't have to visit the trash can at all, then there's no danger they'll throw stuff away by mistake. And if something gets lost, well, it was all super-cheap from a garage sale anyway.

Rags, rags, rags. We don't throw out torn/ripped clothing that's too badly damaged to patch anymore. After cutting off buttons and zippers for later use, we cut everything we can into 12" squares. Wrapping food in them is just one of hundreds of uses. Hey, it was good enough for Ma Ingalls!
