Monday Mission: Release Your Fear of Fats

September 28th, 2009 · 8 Comments · Fat Full Fall

Your mission, if you choose to accept, is to release your fear of fats.  This mission is paired with this week’s Food for Thought on the role fat plays in your body, which is a must-read.

Level of Commitment: Making Strides

Fat Full FallI was the kind of teenager who sopped the grease off her pizza with a napkin.  I used to rail at my dad when he would slather (seriously, multiple tablespoons) butter on his toast or use half a stick on his baked potato.  Once I was on my own in college, I always drank skim milk, bought fat free dairy products and reduced fat treats, and I always trimmed every bit of fat and skin off my chicken breasts.

I’ve come around a bit.

Our family drinks and eats only full-fat dairy now.  I leave the fat in my chicken stock and relish the fact that I can throw in the skin.  I put fat in my oatmeal instead of sweetener.

It’s been a fat full year for us (but no one is getting fat).  Now let me share a Fat Full Fall with you!

This challenge may not be accomplished this week.  It may take some convincing.  That’s why I’m not asking you to stop being afraid of fat…just begin to release your fear and be open to learning some new information in this series.

Ugh! Thank you so much for helping spread the word about healthy fats (and even not so healthy fats in moderation!) I wish people (women especially) could let go of the 1980′s propaganda that lead them to the processed, low-fat, cardboard and styrofoam, fake food isle. Keep spreadin’ the word…and the butter!

First thing I ate this morning – coconut oil! I’ve added it to my diet to help with my thyroid and haven’t gained a bit of weight because of it. No fear here! ;-)

This article is truly wonderful! I have a slight fat fear – grew up drinking skim milk but after losing too much weight running, transitioned to 2%. I do have to say my ultimate favorite if I’m drinking it plain is 1% milk, but I’m definitely gonna keep whole or 2% in my fridge for cooking!

    Thank you for your inspiration!

I am working on releasing my fear of fat. My mother just had quadruple bypass surgery in August and I know some fats are good for me, but I still struggle with consuming it.

    Tamra,
You’re not alone! It’s a tough one. No need to overdo it, just find the best fats you can and eat them with each meal. Be well! :) Katie

I just watched a documentary about fat recently and it got me thinking about how we eat. I found your website through a link in a comment on another website. :-) Question about milk. I grew up drinking whole milk and was as skinny as a rail. I now drink skim milk and of course can’t lose weight. The problem now is I don’t really like the taste of whole milk and am afraid of organic milk because every organic dairy product I’ve tried, I’ve hated.

Any clue on how not to get over my fear of fat, but my dislike of fat full and/or organic milk?

    Cathy,
Perhaps start with cooking with whole milk, whole milk yogurt (divine!) and other ways where you don’t have to drink it. I totally get that the creaminess/thickness is a mental hurdle to get over after years with skim; I was the same way. All I can say is that now I just love the creaminess and wouldn’t go back – so take baby steps! :) Katie
