I make a whole bunch of stuff from scratch nowadays, but I haven’t always been this way. I add a task here, a recipe there… I’m really excited to host the October Fest Carnival of Super Foods tomorrow (Thursday 10/22) where the theme is “Un-Processed Foods”. We’ll “fight back” against the processed foods industry by making our own doggone food in our own kitchens. Intimidated by the idea of making things from scratch that most people buy in the store? That’s what this carnival is all about – you’ll be able to find recipes from normal, everyday people like you for all sorts of things that you usually find in a box or a bag with a bar code attached.
Bloggers, collect your best recipes that can teach us how to feed our families “Un-Processed Foods!” And if you don’t blog, I’d love to see recipes in the comments section if you have a gem to share. A few people have done so in the last carnivals, and I really appreciate it!
A a bonus, anyone who shares a recipe will get an extra entry to win some “white whole wheat” flour from King Arthur, so you can start making something new from scratch without any capital investment in a new ingredient! (Be sure to get in on the Real Food by Nina Planck book giveaway before Thursday at midnight for a chance to win both Planck’s books!)
Simple Guidelines
- Healthy ingredients, please. It doesn’t really help to make one’s own food if you’re going to include trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, etc. I’m not against a bit of white sugar or white flour – but let’s try to be at least half whole grain and lower on the sugar than the store.
- If it’s more frugal to make your recipe at home than to purchase it (and it usually is!), point it out. People love cost comparisons, like: “I save at least $200 a year making my own yogurt.”
- It’s okay to use an old post. Who am I to exclude the best breadsticks in the world just because it’s already been blogged about last year?
- Be sure to link back to the carnival post so that others can benefit from the recipes shared there.
- The carnival should be up by about 10:00 EST Wednesday night. I’ll tweet it when it’s ready!
- The last edition of the Super Foods Fest is next Thursday, 10/29: Healthy Fats Recipes (think butter, lard, coconut oil, EVOO).
- Previous carnivals:
- October 1: Bean (legume) Recipes
- October 8: Broth Recipes
- October 15: Super Foods Recipes

Does this count (http://commonsensehomesteading.blogspot.com/2009/09/sassy-salsa-or-how-i-get-my-kids-to.html)? I make my own homemade salsa with homegrown veggies and can in quantity to use year round. Using my own veggies it’s much less expensive than store bought.
