coconut_oil_32ozThis is a little backward, posting a review and giveaway before explaining WHY I’m choosing to use coconut oil in my cooking and giving you some Food for Thought, but the concept meshed so perfectly with the Healthy Fats Carnival that here we are.  My calendar and I rarely get along anyway!  Look for more coconut oil information by tomorrow, but for now…here are my thoughts on Tropical Traditions coconut oil.

UPDATE:  Health Benefits of Coconut Oil and Coconut Oil FAQs and How-Tos

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.  WINNER ANNOUNCED MONDAY; THANK FOR ENTERING!

First, I’m incredibly impressed with Tropical Traditions’ commitment to quality and purity. Their product is truly top of the line, grown organically, traditionally prepared, utilizing small farms and local labor to keep the economy going in the Philippines, and carefully processed to preserve all the nutrients available.  That being said, the oil tastes a lot different than the other two brands I’ve had experience with.

The coconut flavor is definitely evident, but there’s something else in the smell and taste that I don’t like very much.  I wish I could pinpoint it for you…maybe it’s less “sweet” smelling than other coconut oil?  I’d give Tropical Traditions the benefit of the doubt and guess that their oil is higher quality than what I’m used to, and you know how often the less refined/more nutritious/pure something is, the worse it tastes!  For myself, between that little strangeness and the high price ($27.50 for this one-quart jar that you can win), I’ll be sticking with this deal that I described in where to buy coconut oil.

On the other hand, if I could win high quality coconut oil with little effort, I’d be entering this giveaway!  Tropical Traditions also has frequent sales to help defray the higher cost of their product. The reviews in their self-published book, which I will quote much more from in tomorrow’s post, rave about the quality of the coconut oil and how many people use it daily in their cooking, as a moisturizer and other personal care, and even as a supplement of sorts to help them feel more full.

As I mentioned yesterday, research shows that having a bit of fat before the meal helps you to digest food more slowly, thus going a longer time before feeling hungry.  Some people achieve this end simply by eating a Tbs of coconut oil before eating.

I tried it.

Once.

Almost lost my cookies.

There’s something about the texture/mouthfeel and smell of eating plain FAT with nothing else that doesn’t go over well with me!  The sensation was quite stomach-churning.  Perhaps I should have tried it in the liquid form instead of solid.  ???  I’ll stick with coconut oil in my baking, smoothies and oatmeal from now on!

Win it!
