This is a little backward, posting a review and giveaway before explaining WHY I’m choosing to use coconut oil in my cooking and giving you some Food for Thought, but the concept meshed so perfectly with the Healthy Fats Carnival that here we are. My calendar and I rarely get along anyway! Look for more coconut oil information by tomorrow, but for now…here are my thoughts on Tropical Traditions coconut oil.
UPDATE: Health Benefits of Coconut Oil and Coconut Oil FAQs and How-Tos
THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. WINNER ANNOUNCED MONDAY; THANK FOR ENTERING!
First, I’m incredibly impressed with Tropical Traditions’ commitment to quality and purity. Their product is truly top of the line, grown organically, traditionally prepared, utilizing small farms and local labor to keep the economy going in the Philippines, and carefully processed to preserve all the nutrients available. That being said, the oil tastes a lot different than the other two brands I’ve had experience with.
The coconut flavor is definitely evident, but there’s something else in the smell and taste that I don’t like very much. I wish I could pinpoint it for you…maybe it’s less “sweet” smelling than other coconut oil? I’d give Tropical Traditions the benefit of the doubt and guess that their oil is higher quality than what I’m used to, and you know how often the less refined/more nutritious/pure something is, the worse it tastes! For myself, between that little strangeness and the high price ($27.50 for this one-quart jar that you can win), I’ll be sticking with this deal that I described in where to buy coconut oil.
On the other hand, if I could win high quality coconut oil with little effort, I’d be entering this giveaway! Tropical Traditions also has frequent sales to help defray the higher cost of their product. The reviews in their self-published book, which I will quote much more from in tomorrow’s post, rave about the quality of the coconut oil and how many people use it daily in their cooking, as a moisturizer and other personal care, and even as a supplement of sorts to help them feel more full.
As I mentioned yesterday, research shows that having a bit of fat before the meal helps you to digest food more slowly, thus going a longer time before feeling hungry. Some people achieve this end simply by eating a Tbs of coconut oil before eating.
I tried it.
Once.
Almost lost my cookies.
There’s something about the texture/mouthfeel and smell of eating plain FAT with nothing else that doesn’t go over well with me! The sensation was quite stomach-churning. Perhaps I should have tried it in the liquid form instead of solid. ??? I’ll stick with coconut oil in my baking, smoothies and oatmeal from now on!
Win it!

Ugh. Eating coconut oil by the spoonful has been recommended to me, as well (as a means for getting the nutritional benefits), but I don’t think I could do that, either!

I signed up for the newsletter, subscribed to your email list, followed you on twitter and Rt’ed you, did a status update on Facebook, and stumbled this post and the scrambled egg recipe that rocks, and the link for #10 did not work for me directly but I used the signup form page to work my way back and I would have to recommend the Hot Cocoa recipe. I do something similar with flavored Stevia and real milk and I LOVE it. Just add a tablespoon of coconut oil to your favorite cocoa recipe and try it!

Thanks for the giveaway and I have to say- I tried swallowing the oil by the tablespoon too and thought it was going to come back up. It really gave me an energy boost though so I tried it again using several smaller tastes that I just swallowed like you swallow a pill and it was less traumatic and worked just as well. Still did not feel so well at first though but not as bad either. I dunno how they do it!

Just wanted to let you know the “different” taste you perceive in the TT Gold Label oil is from how it’s made – it’s a *fermented* oil.
The fermentation process makes it incredibly healthy (antioxidants and such), but it’s not the same as a cold-pressed, machine-produced oil, and the taste is an indicator.
We use CO exclusively around here, and TT is our brand of choice.

I’ve had a little coconut oil by itself, but I wouldn’t want to do it every day. I was putting some in my coffee (that I haven’t given up yet) and that was fine, but then I started getting coconut cream from the Asian store and much prefer that in my coffee. Wonderful flavor and no oil droplets.
