You should not be reading blogs today.
This is posted on Christmas Eve, not because I expect many people to be reading today, but because it’s going to be up until at least Monday, and I thought I should have something fun for y’all to read if blogging is your down-time activity over the weekend.
I’ll probably have a few more posts before 2010 hits, but I’m thinking most people will be enjoying time with their families next week. If you’re in a blog reading mood, do browse the archives here and putter around a bit.
As for me, I’ll be enjoying my own family (hubby likes to save up vacation to take the whole week off as he found it very painful the first year he was a “real adult” and didn’t have a Christmas break!) and focusing on blog maintenance and prep for the future when I am working.
Here are some teasers for my loyal readers to whet your whistles, and for my new readers to give you something to look forward to:
- New yogurt lessons and changes I’ve made since this pivotal post.
- Dissecting the science of soaking grains – my correspondence with the experts and the facts and guesses surrounding phytates.
- Real Food Bloggers Face-Off: Some favorite and some new real food bloggers answer questions about their kitchens head to head. Already nearly a dozen are interested! Any ideas for 3-sentence-answer questions to ask them?
- Care for Husbands: Some ideas about how to gently ease husbands into healthier living.
- Spring Cleaning: Getting the Junk Out: I’ll be organizing a rotating carnival, hosted by a different blogger each week, focusing on “getting rid” of various things, from trans fats to plastic to budgetary fat.
- Upcoming Giveaways: Life Without Plastic, Charlie’s Soap, and another from Tropical Traditions, if I ever decide what I want to try from there!
- Review of Practically Green by Mindful Momma
- My trials, tribulations and successes with a sourdough starter…and the hunt as I captured the yeast myself!
- More beans lessons from the bean master.
- A series I’m considering: Seeking the Perfect Whole Wheat Homemade Bread. I’d try one recipe every week and post the results.
- Shoddy Shortcuts Series: All the little ways I save time and cut corners in the kitchen.
- How to adapt your favorite recipes to use Real Food ingredients: I’ve done it with our family’s chili and my husband’s ultimate favorite meal, his mom’s Pepper Steak recipe. And he likes it. (Or he loves me too much to be honest!) I’ll teach you how to reverse engineer ingredients and make your “own” recipe without the added MSGs, weird fats, high fructose corn syrup, and other unpronounceable “foods” that are in packaged mixes, cans, etc. Added Bonus: most of the time, your recipe will become cheaper, too.
- And something to whet your appetite…Here are just a few of the photos of food I have in my file that I will someday post recipes for. Vote for your favorite that you’d like to see first!
Also, I will be accepting guest posts for 2010. If you have words of wisdom on the subjects of healthy eating, kitchen efficiency, stewarding the earth, trimming the food budget or keeping the faith while you cook, please contact me via email at kitchenstew at gmail.com (remove spaces). I’ve already got one excellent piece lined up!
Don’t forget to get your entry(ies) in the Skoy cloth giveaway! They’re growing on me this week, after my mixed review. See the post for updates.
If you see any after-Christmas sales on Advent Storybook: 24 Stories to Read Before Christmas, grab it up for your children, godchildren, nieces, nephews, whomever! My son’s eyes were absolutely twinkling with glee as we reached the second to last story, in anticipation of the little bear reaching the manger to see the baby Jesus born!
(Note: Wordpress had an issue and missed my scheduled posts for yesterday. If you receive by email, you may have missed the last Advent Daily Dose and this note about organic sheets.)

My hubby is the same way about ‘Christmas break’ – but me, I’d rather take time off during the warmer months. Merry Christmas, Katie!

If you do a series about whole grain breads, you HAVE to try mine! I have tried so many recipes and finally settled on one I love. It is absolutely my go-to recipe and everyone I’ve made it for loves it. It’s versatile, too — I can make it dairy-free, or not, and with different flours (whole wheat, white, spelt, white whole wheat so far). The only trick left is to make it gluten-free, but I haven’t had success with it yet.
Also I wouldn’t mind doing a guest post for you, if you’re accepting from other bloggers, depending on what you’re looking for. I write on MANY different subjects! Debt-free living, recipes, and children seem to be my audience’s favorites.
Merry Christmas!

Would love to see a post/series on how to make your favorite recipes with whole foods ingredients! I am just finishing reading REAL FOOD, and definitely want to make some changes to our diet in the next year. There are lots of recipes that we love that I have been making lately and thinking how could I change/tweak this to make it more healthy?
Also looking forward to your search for a whole wheat bread. I would love to be able to make whole wheat bread at home and get away from store bought!
Thanks for all you do here at KS! I have loved reading your blog the last few months – it is definitely one of my must reads every day!

The Wanna Be Skillet Lasagna looks yummy. I’m also interested to see your rice pudding recipe. I came across and have been making an oh-so-easy and delicious slow cooker recipe for the pudding — a way to use up the remainder of a gallon of milk before it spoils (which happened a couple of times). So between making my own yogurt and the rice pudding, I can safely use up a gallon of milk, which is more cost effective than buying a half gallon.
Hope you had a great Christmas with your family.

Just want to say I am *really* looking forward to what you’ve learned in the phytic acid debate!! I’ve read murmurs of controversy elsewhere online, but never dug into it. I’m excited that you have been in conversation with the experts!
Happy New Year!
