Hi, I just wanted to mention that I believe the theory that The Rings of Saturn are made up entirely of single socks.

Using old sheets for TP, #1 only, really a smart idea. People may look sideways at the idea but way back when fabric scraps were used once a month and washed out for reuse...makes "sheet TP" sound easy by comparison.

Karen,
I do use rags sometimes for greasing my cast iron; just kind of keep those separate from others since they'll get more grimy. You're right though - raw chicken and grease might be a job for disposables...may not be worth the washing power you'd want on a rag. ??? :) Katie

I haven't read thru all the responses yet (but will) but I've not seen many who use paper towels like we do: to wipe up grease, to wipe down cast iron skillets, do dry a roasting chicken. Would unpaper towels work for that?

As for the sheets, if you have a dog - they could be cut into long strips, have knots tied into them and make great dog toys! And, if the dog chews it up, you're not out $15 a toy.

As for using disposable diapers, if you just have to do it, remember that timely toilet-training can help cut down on landfill waste, too. : )

I have found that steam-cleaning can be a great alternative to using chemicals. I have a brand-name steam mop, I bought 20 extra mop heads for it so that I could launder them all together (they are supposed to be laundered separately from other items) and I can clean the whole house at once, do a load of laundry - and I'm done!

Well, this post was an eye opener for me. I always have done a lot of tossing when it came to doing a big clean. It is so discouraging to have so many little things I don't know what to do with, that (until now) I have just tossed. Thanks for the awareness!

Because I am "cheap", I refuse to buy those Swiffer mop pad things. I use a wash cloth and two rubberbands that I wrap around the Swiffer mop thing. Then I toss the rag into the towel basket to wash. I use a spray bottle of vinegar on the floor and spray a bit of water and mop. Works just as good as the Swiffer pads and solution.
