It's Sunshine Awareness Week at Kitchen Stewardship! I'm burned on half my body as a result of testing natural sunscreens...be sure to check all this week's posts for the scoop on what works, what doesn't, and when (if?) we need sunblock at all, along with over $400 in sun protection giveaways. Check out the natural sunblock review for the scoop.

I’m honored and excited to be part of the writing team at Simple Organic, one of the new blogs of the Simple Living Media family founded by Tsh at Simple Mom.
Today I’m talking antibacterial soap, one of my weird passions and the very first Monday Mission ever here at Kitchen Stewardship. You’ll learn about good and bad bacteria, how antibacterial agents work, and how you should be washing your hands for the good of the earth and your family. In three weeks, I’ll be returning to the subject here as a kickoff to a new spring carnival (details next week), where you’ll learn what THIS is:
While you’re over there, check out the other contributors – an amazing group of women! We’ve covered personal care and are beginning to discuss gardening, and everyone’s posts are top notch.
In Other News…
- Have you been keeping up with the Real Food Face-Off? It’s nearly over with just two remaining. I’m thrilled to announce that tomorrow, right here, you can get a glimpse into Sally Fallon Morell’s kitchen! The author of Nourishing Traditions often seems intimidating to me, and if you feel the same way, you’ll be pleasantly enlightened after reading her down-to-earth interview. Shannon from Nourishing Days is the lucky face-off contender to line up with Sally!
- I still have one more surprise up my sleeve…who do you think I get to face off against next Tuesday?
- Did you see Jenny of Nourished Kitchen was on CNN Health yesterday? Amazing exposure for real food!! See the article here and leave a nice comment or “like” some of the positive ones for her. A lot of people were pretty nasty in the comments – I’m so glad that doesn’t happen here!
- I tried to write this from the Droid phone that Verizon is so kindly letting me test out this week, but I couldn’t remember my Wordpress password. !! Dear Verizon, I have lots more I want to try on your phone. Please let me keep it forever (and pay for the plan, too!)
Heh heh heh…I’m getting spoiled! - If you haven’t gotten in the Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day giveaway or the free hour of holistic health consulting, there’s still time before Friday at midnight!
- My talk on “Just Food” went great last night. If you’re a local reader, here’s an incredible resource for buying sustainable and/or local food in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area: Greater Grand Rapids Food Systems Council – click on the food guide on the left sidebar.
- I had the distinct pleasure of (finally) watching “Julie and Julia” last night for date night with hubs. Here’s what I might have tweeted if I hadn’t given it up for Lent!
- What a joy to watch a movie about FOOD and BLOGGING and GREAT HUSBANDS who support their crazy wives, especially with my own great, supportive husband!
- If I dropped my cream-cheese stuffed whole chicken on the floor, I would probably throw that same exact fit!
- I’m totally jealous that Julie got to blog without having to worry about taking pictures and all the other behind-the-scenes stuff I have to juggle.
- How I would love just ONE phone call from an editor, publisher, magazine, literary agent, or the New York Times saying, “Call me!” I don’t need 65, really, just one will be fine.
- Ah, butter! What a great movie!!
See you over at Simple Organic today – back here tomorrow for a Sally Fallon Morell face-off and some more juicy phytate/soaking grains information!!

that’s exactly how I felt about Julie and Julia! It inspired me and delighted me…
I started my sour dough starter last night! It looked just like your pictures this morning. Thanks for step by step (by step!) directions and pictures making this seem so attainable.
I also have some artisan bread rising.
Do you realize how many kitchens you are effecting? It’s like you virtually visit and inspire me every day. Amazing. Keep up the good work.

Trina,
Katie
You have totally made my day. It’s incredible to think about people doing anything b/c I’ve asked them to! Can’t wait to hear people’s sourdough successes!

I just read the CNN article and as usual (when I read news articles) was disheartened by the comments. Although, I am now inspired more than ever to continue teaching other ladies, old and young, how to eat real food. I feel there is precious little I can affect leaving a comment on a news article but a world of good I can do for a woman who is ready and willing to make the change.

p.s I do see your point though in encouraging us to leave positive comments. I just cannot bring myself to do it today.
