My husband, you know, takes the fermented cod liver oil in capsule form. He struggles to even help give it to the kids because sometimes he might get some on his hands and have to smell it.
He therefore gets to sit around and laugh at all the faces we all make while we swallow it. Hmph. He mentions about once a month that I should post videos online of us taking Green Pasture FCLO…and I finally agreed with him.
Ready for a little laugh?
Here’s my family, taking our fermented cod liver oil (and I couldn’t leave out the extra videos I took just in case the first ones didn’t look so good. My husband and I were cracking up watching all of them!). I’ll annotate them a bit so you know what to watch for and at least get to participate a little if you don’t/can’t watch videos online.
Two-year-old Leah:
Watch how doggone excited she is to be on video! She is never excited about taking her FCLO. She even licks the spoon in the video, which would never happen in real life. Just watch the face very closely. This is what I think is going on in her head:
“So excited, I’m on video, so excited” – FCLO hits her mouth – “Oooh, that’s rough – still excited, this is fun, this is different, sure I’ll lick the spoon…annnnnnnd…arg. Can’t do it anymore. Where’s that milk? Gahhhhh!”

Five-year-old Paul:
This was his first time taking the unflavored stuff. He’s pretty tough about it on all occasions, but he knows to have water handy. For some weird reason, perhaps because he’s done it on a spoon for quite some time, he forgot to completely close his lips on the “shooter” which cause a drip or two to splash out of his mouth.
That explains why I say, “Oh, gross,” in the background. The battery on my camera ran out just as he was dramatically saying, “THAT was not as good as I expected!!”

Me, the tough mommy:
I promise, I was not trying to make crazy faces. I just can’t stop them. The cinnamon really is almost like candy to me now, but I still can’t swallow it the first second it hits my tongue. The yuck part comes after you swallow, when the FCLO is at or just past the very back of your tongue. I subconsciously postpone that part for a few seconds!
It also looks so weird how I twist my spoon – that’s me trying to not touch the fermented cod liver oil with my lips yet still clean off the spoon well so as to not waste a drop, using my tongue.

Paul, take two:
Leah wanted to help, but she totally dripped liquid all over the place! Do you love the quote, “Uh oh, was that the sound of dripping???” and then watch her face as she looks down to try to find it. Again, Paul just takes it like a man, like “I have to do this so I’m getting it over with.” He wears his determined look.

Leah, take two:
Again, very excited to do what Paul did!

The videos put a smile on my face this morning. YES – I take my Green Pastures Cinnamon Flavor Cod Liver Oil. I even got my husband to start taking it…I convinced him it’s like a “shot.”

Just wondering why you would choose the liquid over the capsules? I have yet to make the plunge and buy the Green Pastures brand, but hope to in the near future.

Capsules are slightly more expensive; but if that’s what it takes to get you to swallow …
My DD2yo and I take liquid in a shot glass of orange juice. My DH takes caps.

Katie,
Katie
Just cost – they’re much less expensive. And for kids who can’t yet swallow pills, it’s the only option. Plus, I’ll take more if I get a heaping teaspoonful vs. 2-3 capsules.

How many servings are in a bottle of FCLO? Thanks!

Alicia,
People take such different doses that that’s really hard to quantify. I’d check the Green Pasture website for sizes: http://www.greenpasture.org/
I’d say a bottle of the FCLO/butter oil mix lasts 6 weeks, maybe for one person taking a heaping teaspoonful? I haven’t paid attn. that closely, to be honest. Sorry!

Capsules I can deal with, but not the liquid
The videos were hilarious- I love the faces you made

I too am wondering the answer to Katie’s question….
[Reply to this comment]
Yes, my girls & I take it, though DH only took it when we were getting ready for number 2. Perhaps I should get some capsules & set them in front of him again. We take it with renewed diligence since after going without for a while DD7 showed up with a couple of cavities in her new molars. Arrrgh!!
My oldest takes it with a sour puss face and an immediate glass of milk. My 18 month old has always taken the unflavored FCLO/BO mix off the spoon & asked for more.
The girls both get the FCLO/BO mix. I take the liquid & the Pecan butter oil (very good). I take a lot of FCLO because I am nursing. The girls couldn’t take the capsules & the extra cost isn’t worth it to me.
[Reply to this comment]
Nope, nope nope, no way could I take that! LOL I have a weak stomach for that sort of thing. It would all come right back up in the sink and it would be such a waste of money.
[Reply to this comment]
This is great! I can’t tell in the video, but do you take the FCLO in liquid form on the spoon? I take the FCLO/BO blend in gel form and with it refrigerated it’s almost solid enough to swallow as a pill, if you keep it balled up on the edge of the spoon and lick it off with the tip of the tongue …just a little bit of slimeyness on the back of the throat as it slides down, haha!
[Reply to this comment]
My kids got a kick out of the videos, as they take it every evening. We all hold it in our mouth and then drink it simultaneously with our water, if that makes sense. Then they quickly shove a gummy bear vitamin in their mouth
.

The videos are funny!

So impressed that your 2yr old takes it! I have to pretty much sit on my 2yr old, pry her mouth open, and shoot it in. :p
I’m curious when most people start their babies on it. I think WAPF recommends 3mos, but I can’t bring myself to give my 3mo old ANYTHING. I know it’s good stuff, but I’m just not accustomed to giving my babies anything but BM until 8 months or so.

I started with mine around 10 months. I’d say once they’re eating solid food regularly. Otherwise, take it yourself and let them get it in the milk!
I totally disagree with the WAPF’s recommendations on starting solids so young. There’s nothing as “real food” as raw, human milk custom-made for baby!

Oh, I give her chocolate chips, and she only takes it 50% of the time!
I haven’t had FCLO and a baby at the same time…I’m guessing 10-12 mos. for us, but we’ll see what happens in the next year!

what is the dose that you are giving your children and yourself? We take it but I think I am not giving enough. Thanks!

Rachel,
You’ll enjoy Green Pasture’s answer about the word “dose” here: http://www.kitchenstewardship.com/2010/11/18/more-on-fermented-cod-liver-oil-an-interview-with-the-boss-and-readers-best-swallow-tips/
My 2yo gets 1/4-1/2 tsp., the 5yo 1/2 tsp and 1 full tsp when coming down with something, and I take a heaping tsp, usually.

OK, everyone, I’ll tell you how to take this and keep all your tastebuds intact. First put the awfulness on the spoon. Put it UNDER your tongue, remove spoon, pour in orange juice until your mouth is full. Take a little swish to make sure the juice is picking it all up and then swallow. The taste won’t vanish but it is GREATLY diminished. It’s the only way we can stomach the stuff around here. Enjoy!

I haven’t tried FCLO yet but my sister’s family does. She said she accidentally sent the gel kind to her college age daughter and she rolled it into a ball and swallowed it. I think I might try it that way.
[Reply to this comment]
Lol, we enjoyed watching those! I have the best luck with my three year old. She actually likes the cinnamon tingle flavor. My 6 year old tolerates the chocolate and takes tiny bits off the spoon and swishes it down with lots of milk. Me? Yeah, I admit to going for the capsules. Even if they are more spendy. Here’s a vid of my youngest taking hers – she always asks for more! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70Na7OwDw-c (If it doesn’t work, I’ll change the setting to public.)
[Reply to this comment]
Yuck! We do it the easy almost tasteless way. Put it in a little beet kvass or strongly flavored juice (don’t mix in, just let it float on top so it goes down first straight to the back of the throat), then swallow quickly – it never hits the front of the tongue so all we taste of it is a bit of the cinnamon flavoring as it goes down.
[Reply to this comment]
I take it in capsule form, I’m a chicken! But I want to start giving it to my kids (1.5 and 5 YO) and the only option is the liquid. When you refer to “gel”, is that the “emulsified” stuff on the Green Pasture site?
[Reply to this comment]
Katie Reply:

Jenny,
No, I just got some “emulsified” stuff, and it’s still liquid, just basically watered down. ??? I don’t get the point, unless it’s supposed to taste less fishy.
The gel is the butter oil blend.
