It just wouldn’t be right to be a green blogger and not mention Earth Day in April, now, would it?
Taking care of your environment, being a good steward of the Earth God has given us, is one of the four pillars of Kitchen Stewardship that we try to balance around here. Springtime is a great time to renew your commitment to being "green"!
We have a fun little tradition at our house this month, which you can read about over at Green…Your Way today:
When I stopped to take pictures, my 2-year-old said, “Mommy, who puts all the litter in the woods?”
“Naughty people,” was my best attempt at a developmentally correct answer.
The best part is that I’m forming a consciousness of “everyone’s responsible” in my children.

Beyond pollution in the woods and in our parks because of litter, we certainly have a lot more "yuck" in our water than ever before. You’ve heard me say it before, and I’m happy to share another April sponsor with you by saying again that I’m pining for a Berkey water filter as soon as we get a new house. I’m even willing to relegate the microwave to the basement and deal with the wrath of the husband for it!
(I was about to do that here when we put our house on the market, again, and adding a huge appliance didn’t seem prudent.)
Jeff, "the Berkey Guy", has answered many a KS reader’s questions about what size would best fit their family and just how it works. You can contact him at LPC Survival, where he’s been selling the Berkey systems for many years.
Have a lovely Earth Day, and don’t forget to sign up for this week’s Plan to Eat giveaway, part of the Eat Well, Spend Less series.
Oh, and that picture at the top? Nothing to do with Earth Day at all.
I just got reprimanded for posting an old photo of myself back here when I rambled about sun protection in Florida, instead of a recent one with the baby bump. So here you go, Kate, and others waiting for a look at new Baby Kimball. Tee hee!

Hilarious! When I saw that other picture I thought “man that lady looks so good, she doesn’t even look pregnant!” I just figured you were one of those who hid it until the end
If you hadn’t ‘fessed up I’d have never known.
That water filter you keep talking about is such a temptation but I cannot bear another thing on the counter. I need them to make a fridge model – I could probably find space that way.

Marcella,
Katie
It was hard to pose sideways and not automatically suck in like a lady. ??? If I did, I would look much less pregnant!

You look good – baby bump and all.
I agree and disagree on some points in the post. Yes, we have a TON of things in our water supply that shouldn’t be there, BUT I don’t think this is the dirtiest it’s ever been. After all, I haven’t seen a river catch on fire any time in the past few decades (http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/01/after_the_flames_the_story_beh.html), nor do we regularly hear of cholera or other diseases being passed in US water supplies.
Now we’ve got to deal antibiotics, chlorine, pesticides and who knows what else. I still think a good filtration system is a good idea.

Laurie, Now that’s a good point about the rivers on fire. I like to exaggerate sometimes! The drinking water is still pretty adulterated, and unfortunately my biggest concern, the estrogens from medicines, cannot be filtered by anything that I know of. Sigh, sigh….

For sure, for sure! We’ve come a long way, but still have a long way to go.

Are you at the King and Prince in this photo? St Simons is our favorite place in the world and this pool looks just like one of theirs. On another note, just downloaded the ebook on sourdough from gnowfglins and am loving it!

Deanna,
Katie
So glad you’re liking the book! We’re just in Orlando, nowhere fancy.
