Got Gluten-Free Friends or Relatives? This Cookbook Can Help {GIVEAWAY}

May 3rd, 2011 · 7 Comments · What to Buy

It seems that many gluten-free cookbooks are aimed at the gluten-free population, which does make sense, but it also makes it hard to jump right in. Typically gluten-free recipes include fancy flours and ingredients like xantham gum that the average cook doesn’t have stocked.

Laura at Heavenly Homemakers teamed up with Kimberlee Tandy, a gluten-free friend, to make a cookbook that is perfect for the beginner and really aimed at helping people with a gluten-free family member or friend to be able to cook for them without fear. image

The co-authors of  Gluten Free and Good For You! start with simple gluten-free cooking tips so you can make sure your loved ones are safe when you invite them over or bring a meal to their house. (If we have to stay gluten-free, I may need to ask Laura’s permission to copy that section for my entire Bible study so I can still benefit from the amazing blessing of the “after-baby-meals”!!!)

The table of contents reads like a typical restaurant menu, with many recognizable favorite dishes, gluten-free style. There’s even homemade mixes for things like dressings and taco seasoning, so you can both address the gluten-free issue AND avoid unhealthy ingredients like MSG, soybean oil, and high fructose corn syrup often found in the grocery store versions. This book is a great resource for any family, really, because you can improve your own nutrition by cooking from scratch whether you’re seeking a gluten-free lifestyle, or not.

The desserts column just *might* be the longest, which doesn’t make me sad at all! Laura uses no refined sugars, mostly honey or sucanat, so you can be assured you’re getting a healthier product. Besides that, carb-filled grains are probably the worst thing to have in an already-sweet dessert, so the dozen dessert recipes, mostly grain-free, will give you an excellent start on cleaning up your family’s sweet tooth.

I’m caught embarrassed, again, that I didn’t get to try the recipes myself. I still plan to, because oh, boy, those peanut butter cookies and flourless chocolate cake – that does not include beans, like the brownies in The Everything Beans Book! – look truly to die for.

    I can’t believe the timing of this! I have just narrowed things down to a gluten sensitivity and after just four days of being GF feel about 80% better (no hives, no joint pain, the fog is clearing). I always thought either you had Celiac Disease or you were susceptible to suggestion. Boy was I wrong!

    So thank you thank you thank you for your blog, your ideas, your information. I am forever grateful!!!
