This is a guest post from Todd of PrimalToad.com. Thank you so much, Todd, as I’m buried in boxes in our new house (yay! and yikes!) this week!
Eggnog smoothie?! You bet! Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas will be gone within the blink of an eye. Eggnog is a classic holiday drink in the US and Canada. It’s traditionally made with dairy but since I don’t normally consume dairy, I decided to give coconut milk a shot. With this smoothie recipe, I did not go through the process of heating the milk and egg yolks. I instead gathered the ingredients and cautiously threw them in the blender.
The first taste was great but did not have enough of an eggnog punch. I then added more nutmeg and gave it another swirl. Still not good enough. A little more nutmeg, ground cloves and vanilla extract did the trick. Third time is a charm!
I now must quote my brother who made the following statement after taking his first sip of the completed recipe: “That’s the best smoothie you have ever made.”
I think I agree. I’m not one to brag but… this one really hit the spot. It most definitely had the eggnog flavor with a hint of coconut. I used ground cloves instead of cinnamon but either will do. You’ll also notice that I used coconut palm sugar. This stuff is amazing and contains trace minerals. Regular sugar or stevia may do the trick. I will also guess that 1/2 of a tablespoon instead of a full may be just fine. The rest of the ingredients blended together are full of flavor.
If you follow the recipe to a T then you should even enjoy a nice froth like traditional eggnog drinks. Alcohol is not included but feel free to add a touch of rum if you wish!

Why do I LOVE smoothies?
Quick. Easy. Delicious. Healthy. Minimal clean-up involved. Full of flavor.
I’ve been enjoying smoothies on a regular basis for about 7 or so years. I’ve been into health my entire life thanks to my awesome parents but back in the day my smoothies consisted of fruit, fruit juice, maybe some ice cream or skim milk…
Basically crap.
Today, my smoothies are 100% Toadally Primal. Many contain fruit but it’s a reasonable amount. I LOVE fruit but am truly losing my appetite for sugar, sugar, sugar all the time. The more primal I am, the more I appreciate the incredible flavors of whole foods. I made 4 recipes with chestnut puree over the past 2 weeks and loved the flavor of chestnut. No extra sweetness was needed.
Some recipes I make are hardly sweet. If you are still consuming a lot of sugar rich foods then some of the recipes most definitely won’t be for you. This is when learning to love stevia and adding just a touch will go a long ways. I love stevia and have a friend here in Chicago who lost 200 lbs. primally. He calls himself a “stevia enthusiast.”
If you add leafy greens to your smoothies then you’ll add a nice nutritional punch. Spinach is the most mild and blends the best as well. It’s also one of, if not the most nutrient dense leafy green vegetable. Give Super Nutritional Powerhouse Smoothie a try and experiment from there. I’ve heard several times that our bodies absorb more nutrients from blended greens compared to greens in a salad. This makes sense since the blender is doing the chewing for us. I love my salads too but it’s good to know this fact.
I could go on and on about smoothies but I’ll let this rant rest in peace for now. If you want to learn more about primal smoothies then head on over to my new website, PrimalSmoothies.com.

WOW that sounds YUMMY! I may give that a whirl: not an eggnog enthusiast, but this reads like something I’d like. Plus … having the ingredients in the house helps

“Plus … having the ingredients in the house helps ”
Reading this from you made me smile. Why? Katie asked me in our email exchange to create a recipe that allows her to make it without having to go out and buy anything.
As you said, I think I accomplished this!
P.S. I just decided to make Toadally Primal Smoothies $10 off for the rest of the year as a Merry Christmas special.
So, don’t use the katie discount code but instead use “Christmas” if you want to buy the book for only only $7. 70 recipes with FREE updates folks!

Just whizzed this up with no substitutions. We found it a bit spicy — fresh spices — so for children especially, you might want to add partial spices and then taste before adding the full amount. Otherwise, delish! I usually don’t bother going dairy free with eggnog, but this is a nice alternative.
And yes, I had Everything in my pantry, so no running out.

Most primal folks use cacao… I use it as I wish. It’s not too often but I haven no worries with it.

oh and a great tip for the best coconut milk I have found..
if you have a local asian market check for frozen coconut milk in bags.. so much better than the cans and nothing else but coconut milk in the ones I bought.

I do something similar but with NuNaturals vanilla stevia. So yummy!

I tried it. It was a bit spicy for my kids — the spices sunk to the bottom and they didn’t finish it. Some of my spices were fresh, so I should have taken that into account.

The recipe sounds divine. I never bought coconut palm sugar before so I googled it. The Tropical Traditions website recommends not using coconut palm sugar to keep the demand low. The increasing demand for coconut palm sugar is at the expense of getting our yummy and more nutritious coconut milk and coconut oil. Please read:
