It was my goal last year to learn to make more fermented foods, and although I did sauerkraut and homemade kimchi a couple times, I wasn’t very good at doing it regularly.
I did learn that my two older kids and husband won’t really eat fermented vegetables, although we all gave it the good old college try a couple times.
My toddler, on the other hand, begs for them. It’s hilarious!
The options I got in the mail from Zukay…
This is how it went down when we tried our first fermented veggie drink from Zukay, called “Super Roots:”
Paul and Leah (ages 7 and 4) both made horrible faces and said quickly, “It’s not for me!” DH smelled it and wouldn’t touch it. John, the toddler, drank Paul’s, Leah’s, and his own and loudly begged for more, which he drank and then poured the fifth serving onto his tray.
I think it’s doable – not quite to the level of “pleasant” or “desirable,” but “acceptable to drink for its health benefits.” Far superior in taste to, say, straight fermented codoil.
Zukay Live Foods makes 7 varieties of kvass, the traditional Eastern European probiotic beverage featured in Nourishing Traditions. I haven’t tried making my own fermented beverage since a very early attempt at “Sweet Potato Fly,” I think it was called, from Wild Fermentation. That was a flop, if you’re interested.
I do like having the option of a fermented beverage instead of only fermented vegetables, because honestly sometimes I just don’t want to get out one more fork, but a few swigs from a bottle works great for my “dose” of probiotics before a meal.
After the Super Root flavor, which is bright pink and includes many root veggies (including beets, if the color didn’t tip you off), I tried “Veggie Medley,” which is nearly clear in color, maybe a light green, so I thought it might be an even milder flavor.
Oops. I’m really not a a fan of this one, but I strongly dislike raw celery, and I’m thinking that’s one of the flavors that is coming through strongly for me. Or maybe it’s parsley. I got through the bottle, but it was definitely drinking for health, not enjoyment. The toddler, naturally, loved it to pieces.

Video: Baby Drinks Kvass
We didn’t even grab the camera until John had already demolished three taster cups of kvass, so here he is begging for FOURTHS (and he wants mine, too, but I’m keeping it away from the slime machine that a toddler becomes at dinner hour):

You’ll hear in the video my husband quipping something like, “John will be the only one in the family who is “strong as bull” in a horrible Russian accent. That was referring to the side of the bottle:
Tough to say if he’s “strong as bull” quite yet, although he has an uncanny reach when he drags a chair over to “help” at the kitchen counter or table. But he was awful happy!

Here’s the real deal on why you want kvass – it’s all about what’s inside:
