Your mission, if you choose to accept, is to, uh…do as I say, not as I do.
Usually I’ve already accomplished the Monday Missions I toss out to you all, but this time, I’m a humbler bumble. I’m not sure why I decided to include clutter in the Spring Cleaning Carnival. Possibly just to be able to include the organizing bloggers’ niche, because I certainly need help with this one, both inside my computer and around my home.
Impact Ratings: How would I know? I’ve never done it!
Level of Commitment: Leap of Faith, i.e. very, very hard
What Should we Organize?
Technically, the theme for this week is “Get Out the Clutter.” If you’ve got physical clutter (yes, I do) in your home, perhaps that should be a good, traditional spring cleaning goal for this week. If you’ve never heard of Flylady before, she’ll help you keep the clutter out for good.
There are lots of other places to find “clutter” or just get organized too. Here are some jumping off points:
- Email inbox: If you don’t have Gmail, get it. I was hesitant to leave my Outlook, but I’m never going back. The search function alone is worth the moving pains. It changed my email life when Simple Mom taught me about the “archive” function, and I’m learning new email tips often at Blogging with Amy. My inbox still has 87 unread emails, but I’m improving!
- Menu planning: We’ve talked about getting that together before here, here and here. You might also use a resource like ListPlanIt (giveaway tomorrow!).
- Recipes: There are some neat suggestions at the comments here about how to organize your recipes, and I’ll share my quick tips on Wednesday as well.
- Paper clutter: You probably can’t tell your child’s teacher to stop sending notes home, but you can call most places that send you mail, especially charitable organizations, and ask them to take you off their list. I even call places we like to give to and ask to be put on “no mail” because I tithe electronically through our bank. It’s lovely to go the mailbox and find just one thing.
- “Stuff” clutter: You may find you want to join Amy’s challenge to get rid of 730 things in 365 days or do something like the 40 Bags in 40 Days Lenetta successfully participated in.
- Mental clutter: If your stress is taking over your life, you may need to talk to someone about it. My friend Luanne Gerrity is an holistic health counselor, one option among many for someone to talk you through finding the balance in your life again.
- Budget mishaps: Next week we’ll discuss keeping your budget in order with Saving Money Plan and some great giveaways.
Remember baby steps, folks. Just choose one.

I definitely need to do this week’s. I HATE clutter, but my house is so cluttered. It’s a very small house, so that doesn’t help. But I need to get rid of a lot of stuff. My plans are to go through my kids’ toys and get rid of a lot of them (probably half of them… or at least all the little stuff), put things away (things that need to be put in the filebox tend to collect on the bar in the kitchen. Which doesn’t help me because I only have 1.5 feet of counter space in the kitchen if I don’t have that bar. So if I want to use the crockpot, that cuts me down considerably). I really need to get this under control.
