It's Sunshine Awareness Week at Kitchen Stewardship! I'm burned on half my body as a result of testing natural sunscreens...be sure to check all this week's posts for the scoop on what works, what doesn't, and when (if?) we need sunblock at all, along with over $400 in sun protection giveaways. Check out the natural sunblock review for the scoop.

I can almost hear the beans bubbling in anticipation of the October Fest Carnival of Super Foods, Bean and Legume Edition in two days! I, for one, am quite excited to expand my repertoire of healthy bean recipes. Beans are such an inexpensive, healthy option to fill our dinner plates.
Expect a short bean cookin’ primer this Thursday and a bazillion bean recipes from all over the blogosphere. (And maybe a little giveaway to boot!)
Non-blogging readers: You can participate too! Just leave your recipe in the comments, or email it to me and I’ll post it as a linked page.
Why Join the October Fest Carnival?
Be the first to experience the new plug-in that allows you to leave an anecdotal description of your recipe, which will entice more people to click on your link. You will also receive two links, one to your homepage and one to the recipe, and they should score higher for Alexa rankings than Mr. Linky-type links. See more info on Super Foods here.
Bloggers, here are some guidelines as your prepare your posts:
- Link up with healthy recipes only – no trans fats allowed, for example.
- You may click on and save the image above to display in your post (but you’re certainly not required to).
- Feel free to link up old posts – who am I to exclude the best super food recipe in the world just because you posted it last year?
- If you have an old post to share, the carnival can be an easy “new” post for the day – just write a post linking to the carnival and to your old post, and you have “something new” to say that day. See how I did this with my homemade chicken stock for two new carnivals here. (I don’t expect this; it’s just an added bonus option.)
- Do link back to the carnival so your readers can benefit from the wealth of recipes. I’ll provide an easy-to-cut-and-paste line for you the day of the carnival if you’d like to use it.
- If you want to prove how frugal your recipe is, cost out the ingredients. People love that!
- Take the time to click on other recipes, leave comments, Stumble/Digg/Tweet about the carnival. More traffic for the carnival is more traffic for you!
- The plan is to have the carnival up by about 10:00 EST each Wednesday night. I’ll tweet it when it’s ready!
- Upcoming themes for your recipes - put ‘em in your calendar:
- October 1: Beans and Legumes
- October 8: Broth/Stock (not just soups!)
- October 15: Super Foods
- October 22: Un-processed Foods (make at home what most people buy in the store)
- October 29: Healthy Fats
Be sure to sign up for an email subscription or grab my reader feed so you don’t miss out on any of the great food round-ups!

Can be an easy post – link to my carnival and to your old post, and you have “something new” to say that day (show ex of mine for “chicken in every pot”)
List super foods, cost is added bonus

Hi! I am excited to submit my recipe. Is this comment form the plugin? If not, where is it?
I have two recipes–is that okay? Or should I save one for another time?

Hannah,
Katie
Sorry if this was unclear: the carnival itself is on Thursday, and two recipes is just fine! I’ll be sure to make that clear in Thursday’s post. Looking forward to seeing your best stuff on Thursday!

I am used to the traditional carnival format so I am still a little confused. Are you saying that tomorrow I will come and leave my link and recipe description in a form? Thanks for clarifying. What a clever idea, so much easier for the host.

Yes, Hannah, much like the traditional carnival, just a different looking form and the opportunity for a longer-than-4-word description. Every Thursday in October! See you tomorrow – Katie
