I’m tossing around titles in my head, but “Is Your Flour Wet?” kind of cracks me up for an eBook filled with soaked grain recipes. It seems to me that the most common misconception when people first hear of the technique of ‘soaking’ their grains is that they have to drown their flour and somehow drain off excess water before baking a recipe.
That image is a great starting point for a FREE recipe eBook with the best of the web’s soaked recipes, don’t you think?
I’m determined to wrap up the soaking grains exploration by the end of this month, and as the big finish, I’d like to share a soaked recipe eBook with my readers, free of charge.
I’ll be posting a round-up of soaked grain recipes Friday, February 25th to which any blogger can add their own favorites. Readers without blogs can also share their goods in the comments section. Mark it in your calendars!
By participating, bloggers agree to allow their recipe to be included in the free eBook along with everything I’ve got to share, hopefully making it a stellar resource for anyone wanting to get into soaking their grains but not sure where to start. Of course, those of us who know “how” to soak our grains are always looking for new recipes, too!
I’m not just a taker, though. Here are the fabulous benefits a blogger can expect to receive by releasing one (or more) of their soaked grain recipes for publication:
- Author retains full copyright of their own material.
- The eBook will contain a link back to the author’s site and a bio, including promotion of any products the author might sell.
- The page announcing the eBook’s publication will also contain a list of contributors with links to their sites (and my Google rank and Alexa aren’t too shabby, so that only helps you).
- All contributors receive the right to offer this eBook as a free gift to their own readers, starting one week after it’s available at Kitchen Stewardship. It can be used as an incentive to sign up for a newsletter or subscribe by email, or just as a free download to promote readership.
If you’re a blogger and interested in participating, you can leave a comment here asking me to add you to my “Real Food Bloggers” email list (or just mark the date and jump in). I can see your email without you having to include it in the text of your comment. And don’t worry, I only use that list when I have something really important to share, which isn’t that often considering how much I talk!
Readers, this month is going to be a biggie! So big, the Monday Mission is suspended for the duration. (Gasp!) Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of baby steps to make with the information coming at you, just nothing official. You can be on the lookout for (in no particular order):
- the Nutrimill grain mill giveaway from Pleasant Hill Grain
- videos of a head-to-head competition between my Nutrimill and my friend’s Wondermill
- how all the different kinds of whole grains are used
- my final review of the Nutrimill after having used it for nearly a year now
- why freshly ground grains trump store bought flour, and how to find quality flour if you don’t have a grain mill yet
- more bread recipes for Seeking the Perfect Homemade Whole Wheat Bread
- soaking vs. sprouting: which is better?
- the most definitive answers I can find about best practices for soaking grains, and of course, the science behind it
- the denouement: “To Soak or Not to Soak” (my best educated guess)
So maybe this will stretch out over two weeks. The rest of February is going to be grains, grains, and more grains, until our family goes grain-free and then gluten-free for Lent in early March!
A few unrelated topics coming up this month include:
- videos of folks taking Green Pasture fermented cod liver oil – want to contribute yours? Upload it to You Tube and share the link with me, and you’ll be famous on KS! I think it will just be fun to see, don’t you?
- a giveaway for some great supplements and coconut oil from Radiant Life
- and hopefully, the release of The Everything Beans Book with a special discount for the first few days!
Why is February only 28 days? Share this on Facebook and follow KS to keep up with all the goodies!

Hi, Katie! I would be honored to participate in your ebook by submitting a soaked grain recipe. My blog has not officially launched yet (launches March 1), but I do have a FB page that I share real food recipes and meal planning, etc. on. I hope you’ll check it out: http://www.facebook.com/TheNourishingHome.
Please add me to your “Real Food Bloggers” email list. Can’t wait to hear from you! Thanks again for this opportunity. Blessings, Kelly

I have several recipes I’d love to include! I’ve recently started a series on whole grains myself, so this is very timely!
I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Nutrimill. I’ve had mine for 6.5 years now and have been very pleased.

I’ve just tweaked an old-fashioned buttermilk buckwheat pancake recipe that has become my family’s hand-down (fork-down?) favorite pancake. Would love to share it with your readers!

Are you going to have any info. about storing whole wheat berries – where, at what temp., etc.?
And any info. about storing freshly ground flour in the freezer – are nutrients still retained if frozen immediately after grinding? How long does freshly ground flour keep at room temp.?
Oh, and about beans. You had replied to my legumes/beans question earlier in the week and you said to NOT soak them with an acid medium. Why? And should they still be soaked overnight then in just plain water? Thanks for the helpful info! I really appreciate it!

Jill,
I’m pretty sure I’ll hit all those questions next week – but if I miss any, just ask in the comments of a particular post! One post will focus more on whole wheat berries and freshly ground flour, another on purchasing store flour if you have no grain mill.
re: beans – acid makes them stay crunchy even if you cook the bejeezers out of them. Plain water, overnight, best if it’s around 140F (I just use hot hot tap water).

I’ve been reading your blog for about 1-2 weeks now. Wow! I love it. So I subscribed of course. I’ve been enjoying your best whole wheat bread thread and thoroughly enjoying it. I’ve even made the rolls, which were given a thumbs up by my family of 6 and neighbor couple that had them with us. I have never soaked grains before but have been ‘soaking’ up information about it and would like to try. I am definitely looking forward to the ebook. Thanks!

I’m so excited and greatful for this!! I have noticed since switching to pretty much all whole foods (nothing pre-made, processed, preserved ect), I have a tummy ache after eating grains. I make my own bread but have never soaked it and it does the same thing. I am hoping this will help!

Please add me to your real food bloggers list. I have quite a few soaked recipes I would love to share between this blog and my Miss Organic’s Kitchen one.
I love the potential title, by the way

Hi! This sounds awesome! I would love to participate!
2 questions:
Does this include soaked brown rice etc, not just soaked wholegrain flours?
Does this include sourdough “soaking”?
Thanks again for organising this and putting together all these great info! (:

Hi there!
I’d love to share this favorite recipe of ours that I recently posted here: http://onebyonebyone.blogspot.com/2011/01/favorite-breakfast.html
As I mention in my post, I’m not sure where it originates, but the recipe as I posted includes some of our own personal tweaking. Please let me know if you can fit it in! And, if you need more, I have some great bread and muffin recipes, as well. Thanks for sharing and including!

Watch for the roundup next week! I’ll email you!

Hi, Katie. I’m thinking that maybe your email went to my spam folder and I accidently deleted as I don’t see an email regarding my request above to be added to the real food bloggers list. I am sorry if you sent it, I will be sure to keep an eye out for it this week. The original soaked grain recipe I would like to submit is my “famous” 24-hour power muffins recipe (see link below). People seem to really love it. Thanks again for the opportunity to submit a recipe. Apologies again, if I missed your first email. Blessings, kel
