natural makeup review (8)

Sometimes, we kitchen stewards have to step out of the kitchen, dust the flour off our hands and dust some powder on our noses.

You may not want to put the flour directly on your nose, but putting food on your face isn’t really a bad idea. (You’ve seen the book, right?) Since our skin is our largest organ and can absorb whatever touches it, what we put on our skin can really be as important as what we put in our mouths.

I haven’t made much of an effort for natural makeup until recently, since I don’t wear it that often.

It’s been something that has been on my mind, however, ever since baby one was born seven years ago. I notice that when certain family members who do wear (heavy) makeup get snuggly with my babies, their clothing ends up with makeup on it.

I always wonder how much is on their little sensitive faces (and in their mouths, at that age!), and I’m telling you – I’m so reassured when my own makeup is not going to hurt them, slobbery kisses and all, similar to my relief with the nurslings’ hand-in-my-armpit gesture and my homemade natural deodorant.

If you’ve been wondering about makeup that is less toxic than the national brands, you’ll want to start with my natural makeup review, where I dished on my experience with each of the companies sponsoring this giveaway plus a few others.

If I was starting from square one with my makeup, here’s what I’d use:

Sample Pack of 6 Sunscreen Formulas

Sponsored by KABANA
$45 value; one-ounce samples of 4 tints plus original and Vit D formulas

From the company:

Green Screen D Organic SPF 35 Original is the newest addition to our line of healthy, effective and family-safe sunscreen products.

Tested to FDA’s new 2011 rules by an independent laboratory and made with only 6 ingredients, it leads the industry in simplicity, broad spectrum effectiveness and certified organic ingredient content. (As of 4/24/12, no other sunscreen manufacturer publishes their SPF testing data online!)

It provides superior broad spectrum UVA protection with a critical wavelength of 380nm. Green Screen D’s SPF of 35 provides the equivalent of 97.1% UVB absorbance protection when used at a density of two milligrams per square centimeter of skin area.

Green Screen® Organic Sunscreen SPF 22 Tinted Nude is healthy, highly effective and safe for children and adults of all ages.

This formula has all the benefits of Green Screen Original SPF 20, but is tinted to blend with skin tones and is excellent for facial use. We also offer bronze, plus neutral and pink as of just this week.

  • Warm beige tone created by the mineral cosmetic pigment iron oxide blends with skin tones. Iron Oxide is the same biomineral that makes blood look red.
  • Excellent for facial use and may be applied to reduce blemishes and blend sunspots
  • Healthy – non-nano, not-micronized Zinc Oxide as its sole active ingredient; Zinc Oxide the only sunscreen active ingredient FDA-approved for children under 6 months of age.
  • Safe – contains simply nine edible-grade, 86% certified organic ingredients and is completely petrochemical-free
  • Effective – provides 95% UV absorption across the entire UVA & UVB spectrum
  • Unique formula – gluten-free, corn-free and vegan
  • Fragrance-free & non-comedogenic
  • Ecosystem approved – biodegradable formula is safe for reefs and the aquatic environment & packaged in 100% recyclable tubes
  • Cruelty-free – never tested on animals – only tested on humans per FDA OTC Sunscreen Monograph regulations
  • Dermatologist recommended

From Katie:

The winner gets all 6 formulas with a variety of tinted shades so that she can blend them to get the perfect color for her skin tone. What I found is that the various shades all blend in really well and are almost unseen when used as sunscreen, which is really nice for adults who don’t want the “Casper the friendly ghost” look common with most natural sunscreen options.

Kabana’s ingredients are just so simple and pure that it was easy to choose this sunscreen as the very top option at my natural sunscreen reviews, so it was a short leap to realizing the tinted blends would make a great foundation.

Kabana is our family’s go-to sunscreen, Green Screen with added Vitamin D for the kids and the tinted blends for adults.
