Easy Homemade All-Purpose Spice Mix Recipe

I have a love-hate relationship with potlucks. I love them because you get to try new foods and you don’t have to cook a whole meal. However, I hate them because my kids and I can typically only eat about fifty percent of the food, and there usually isn’t much in the way of nourishing food.

Because of this, I always make sure to bring something nutrient-dense that is safe for my family.

For one particular small get-together with a potluck, I brought roasted vegetables. It was the only vegetable! And everyone loved it. The next day at church someone asked me what my “secret” seasoning was.

Homemade All-Purpose Seasoning

I paused for a moment. Secret seasoning? I’m a creature of habit and simplicity. I just used the same spices I use in all of my food. There was no secret.

But after thinking about it I realized there was sort of a secret ingredient – turmeric.

I use turmeric for a punch of flavor without tasting spicy (my kids are not a fan of spicy foods).

That is when my all-purpose seasoning blend was born. It’s simple, yet so delicious and unique!

All-Purpose Seasoning with Pantry Ingredients

Seasoning your food really doesn’t get any easier. All it takes is a few pantry staples mixed together. This simple seasoning includes:

Not only does this provide great flavor, but it also adds nutrition to your food.

Turmeric is anti-inflammatory (you can add pepper to your spice mix to boost turmeric’s health properties if your family likes the taste). Oregano is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and has antioxidant properties. Real salt is a great source of minerals. Finally, nutritional yeast is loaded with both vitamins and minerals, including some key nutrients like most of the B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, and copper.

What Can You Use All-Purpose Seasoning On?

Keeping an all-purpose spice mix on hand really speeds up your food prep. I often find myself taking four to eight different seasonings out of the cupboard and adding them one at a time. With a prepared seasoning, it’s one and done!

This all-purpose seasoning is so versatile. It can be used on just about anything. Some options include:

It even makes a great simple seasoning for pasta. Especially for those kids that prefer plain noodles instead of sauce.

A homemade seasoning blend is very simple to store. Make a big batch and keep it in a mason jar with a lid or in a shaker-style spice jar. I like to keep a smaller container in the cupboard for easy access and a larger container in the pantry for refills.

Seasoning Mix Recipe Kids Can Make

As a mom of four, I love recipes that are easy enough for young kids. This all-purpose seasoning recipe is the perfect fit.

Kids get great practice measuring and leveling (no holes, no hills!). And you don’t have to worry about spills or mistakes because the recipe doesn’t have to be exact.

When it’s time to cook, your little one can help season as well. And you don’t have to clean up five spices all over the counter after he or she is done.

Your child will feel so proud for helping. Plus he or she is more likely to eat whatever is being served. This is a great way to encourage your child to eat his or her veggies!

Simple All-Purpose Seasoning

Not only is this all-purpose seasoning a pantry staple for your own home, but it makes a unique and thoughtful gift for teachers, grandparents, and friends.

Let your older kids make cute labels. Let your younger kids mix the seasonings. It’s a team effort, and everyone feels like they contributed.

This is a gift that people will actually use and appreciate (instead of one more ornament or mug). Your kids can give it along with this homemade hot chocolate mix or homemade kettle corn granola. Teacher Christmas gift dilemma – solved!
