Many young adults are excited about their first taste of alcohol. It feels like a very grown-up thing.
I think I’m the oddball. There was never alcohol in my house growing up, so I didn’t really think much of it. No anticipation. No desire. But when I went on a trip to Europe for a college class, everyone was trying beer. Yes, it’s legal to drink at a younger age in Europe.
So I had a sip. And that was all I needed. No thanks.
When I was 23 I had my first mixed drink on my honeymoon – a Pina Colada. It was OK, but I let my husband drink most of it. Just not my thing.
What Is a Good Drink for Electrolytes?
I’ve tried champagne and wine. Nope. It turns out my body is actually very sensitive to alcohol due to its histamine content. One sip makes all of my muscles tense up. It’s not a pleasant feeling. It also turns out that drinking a lot of alcohol is really hard on your liver. And since most people have very burdened livers from our toxic world, drinking alcohol regularly is not doing you a lot of favors.
When it comes to beverages, my goal is always hydration. Our bodies need electrolytes (charged minerals) to absorb fluids properly (which is why I don’t recommend RO water).
But I also like flavor. It’s also fun to have a fruity, festive drink here and there. Enter the mocktail. A non-alcoholic cocktail. But I go a step further and make it hydrating!
Is It OK to Mix Electrolytes with Alcohol?
In general, alcohol is considered a dehydrating drink, also known as a diuretic. This means it increases urination, flushing out key minerals.
To counteract this effect, make sure you are drinking plenty of hydrating fluids and getting key minerals, such as sodium and potassium.
If you really like the full cocktail flavor, add a little alcohol to this electrolyte version of the cosmopolitan. Even just a pinch of unrefined sea salt or some coconut water can really boost the mineral content of your cocktail, making it less dehydrating.
Healthy Mocktail Recipe
There are many cocktails to choose from. But if you’re looking for a fun mocktail for the holidays, a cosmopolitan is a great choice.
The combination of cranberry, lime, and citrus really highlights the flavors of the Christmas season.
Best of all, it’s super easy to make! You can mix up a big batch for your guests to enjoy before or with a meal. You’ll create a delicious drink for everyone, whether they like to consume alcohol or not.
Mocktail Cosmopolitan with Electrolytes
The key to a delicious mocktail is getting the fruit flavors right. This cosmopolitan includes unsweetened cranberry juice, freshly squeezed lime juice, and just a splash of orange juice. You can also add lemon if you like.
The tartness of the fruit juice is offset with a little maple syrup for a drink with a kick that won’t make you pucker.

Electrolyte Drink for Adults
There are several ways to add electrolytes to this simple mocktail cosmopolitan.
A combination of unrefined sea salt or Himalayan pink salt with coconut water gives a great balance of sodium and potassium.
You can also add your favorite trace mineral drops. In addition to sodium and potassium, they contain magnesium, chloride, sulfate, lithium, and boron. This contributes a great mineral profile to your drink.
Finally, you can go really simple with a Jigsaw orange pickleball cocktail. Simply add about a quarter of a scoop for a boost of minerals and a little extra orange flavor.
I like to add all of them for a super-charged cocktail!
Simple Electrolyte Cocktail Recipe
Cocktails are intended for adults. However, even kids will love this fruity mocktail version of the Cosmopolitan. This is especially true for kids who don’t like things overly sweet.
When serving to kids, simply refer to this fun drink as a homemade electrolyte drink. You don’t want your kids walking around saying that you serve them cocktails! Though they will think it’s pretty great to drink what the adults are drinking.
If you really want to make it fun, you could turn this into cosmopolitan mocktail gummies with a little gelatin (use the coupon KS10 for 10% off!) (made similar to these lemon elderberry gummies). A special treat for the whole family!
Whether you’re gathering with friends, hosting a family Christmas party, or just relaxing at home after all the chaos, this simple electrolyte cocktail recipe is sure to hit the spot and keep you hydrated.
